Organization: Equal Rights Trust
Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Closing date: 20 Jun 2016

The Equal Rights Trust is an independent international organisation whose purpose is to combat discrimination and promote equality as a fundamental human right and a basic principle of social justice. We are seeking a legal research intern to gain experience of research, advocacy and litigation in the area of equality and human rights.

This is an exciting opportunity for graduates and/or post-graduates, with an interest in human rights and combating discrimination, to contribute to the work of an international human rights NGO.

The internship is offered for a period of six months. Interns may apply for a needs based grant of up to £4,000 to enable them to meet their living costs during this period. Candidates must be available to start the internship in early July if not before.

Responsibilities

The internship will see an involvement in certain aspects of the Equal Right Trust’s work, such as:

  • Undertaking legal research and drafting reports into equality and non-discrimination within a particular country or in relation to a particular theme;
  • Researching and drafting legal and policy submissions;
  • Producing and editing case summaries;
  • Tracking legislative and judicial developments in a range of countries;
  • Sourcing and evaluating advocacy opportunities;
  • Researching, writing and editing content to be uploaded onto the Trust’s website;
  • Providing editorial support, including editing and proofreading of the Trust's core publications.
  • Provide additional support the Trust’s team as and when needed.

The position is intended as a learning experience: at the end of the six-month period, you will have gained an understanding of a wide variety of legal research and advocacy techniques and have acquired skills relevant to work in an international human rights organisation.

Skills and Experience Required

Candidates most likely to benefit from the internship will have:

  • A graduate or post-graduate level education;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of international human rights law and/or equality law;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
  • Ability to produce written material in a clear, coherent and persuasive manner;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Fluency in major languages other than English – in particular Arabic, Chinese, French or Russian.

How to apply:

Please apply by sending a covering letter, a curriculum vitae and contact details for two referees to internrecruitment@equalrightstrust.org. Applications should be sent by email only, with the subject “Legal Research Internship”.

The deadline for applications is Monday 20 June 2016. Please note that applications will be reviewed and considered on an ongoing basis and so it is to your advantage to apply as early as possible.
