The Equal Rights Trust is an independent international organisation whose purpose is to combat discrimination and advance equality worldwide. The Trust promotes a unified human rights framework on equality, focusing on the complex relationships between different types of disadvantage and developing strategies for translating the principles of equality into practice. The Trust works in over 30 countries, pursuing its objectives through advocacy, litigation, development of resources, and movement building.

Reporting to the Executive Director and assisting the development team as directed, the post holder will be central to the development of the Trust’s equality and human rights programmes worldwide, helping to implement the Trust’s development strategy. The successful candidate will have experience of human rights research, coupled with outstanding organisational and communications skills. They will be expected to apply these skills to research, design, and drafting of high quality project proposals and develop and manage relationships with a wide range of partners and funders including institutional funders, trust and foundations, partner NGOs and others. The post holder will be a key contributor to the Trust’s development and will be exposed to the realities of implementing human rights work globally.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist in implementing the Trust’s development strategy and meet ambitious fundraising targets;
  • Undertake high quality research on the human rights and equality issues to be referred to and included in future project proposals;
  • Coordinate the research and identification of funding opportunities, including trusts and foundations, governmental agencies, corporate donors and individuals, and match the Trust’s interests with their funding agendas;
  • Coordinate the process for conceptualising and designing proposals for new projects and ensure input from relevant staff;
  • Identify and enlist suitable project partners sharing the Trust’s values and complementing its work on specific projects;
  • Draft letters of inquiry, concept notes and full proposals to potential funders, with input from the team, contributing to and implementing senior staff decisions on approach and design;
  • Liaise with partner organisations and external experts in the process of researching and developing project proposals;
  • Coordinate the submission of funding applications, in compliance with funders’ rules and deadlines;
  • Maintain the Trust’s fundraising records.

Essential skills and experience:

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in law (preferred), social sciences or other relevant discipline;
  • Strong background in international human rights law;
  • Outstanding research skills;
  • Good understanding of international politics and current global developments;
  • Experience of work in a human rights organisation;
  • Fluent written and spoken English and the ability to produce high quality written material;
  • Fully numerate and able to develop complex budgets;
  • Able to work methodically and under pressure, prioritise work, and meet non-negotiable deadlines;
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills;
  • Excellent IT skills.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Familiarity with equality and non-discrimination law and/or international development;
  • Experience in developing and articulating tools such as logical frameworks and theory of change;
  • Proofreading and editing experience.
  • Fluency in other languages a distinct advantage (French or Spanish preferred);
  • Experience in identifying and developing relationships with civil society partners overseas;
  • A track-record of securing funding from institutional donors, or grant making foundations;
  • Knowledge of major institutional donors and grant making trusts and foundations and their policies;
  • Experience in drafting letters of inquiry, concept notes and full proposals for programmes comparable to the Trust’s.

Salary range: £21,000 – £27,000

The position is based at the Trust's office in London. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK.
